Saiyans are a humanoid warrior race from the Dragon Ball franchise, who were nearly obliterated by Frieza. Saiyans possess the ability to transform into more powerful forms, namely the Super Saiyan and Great Ape form, alongside a heightened strength when compared to a human, to the point that a Saiyan child could annihilate all life on a planet similar to Earth. The name of their race is thought to come from one of several reasons, the most popular two being that they are named after Journey to the West which is called Saiyuki in japanese or their name is a pun on the japanese word for vegetable (yasai), which could be connected to the fact that all full-blood saiyans names are based off of vegetables (except for Vegeta, Tarble, and King Vegeta, whose names are direct puns on the word vegetable).

Saiyans are outwardly very similar to that of humans, with the exception of their monkey-like tails and have larger muscular builds (with the exeption of Gine, who can't fight). Full blood saiyans are commonly seen to have deep black hair that does not grow back when cut or even grow anywhere at all (sometimes with the exception of facial hair) although there have been rare occasions when they have also been shown to have brown, blue and blonde hair. Since their hair does not grow, full blood saiyans are born with a full head of hair. Saiyan hybrids, however, grow hair normally like humans. In addition, they seem to possess large hearts, as evidenced by portions of what appears to be Bio-Broly's heart shortly after he was drenched in the Culture Fluid.

All pure-blooded Saiyans are born with tails, monkey-like in appearance and covered in brownish fur. The tail is a particularly sensitive area for Saiyans who had not trained it. When grabbed or injured, it causes great pain to the owner, and temporarily immobilizes the whole body. However, the Saiyans can train themselves to overcome this weakness, like Goku did when he was preparing for the 22nd World Martial Arts Tournament or Vegeta and Nappa before coming to Earth. After training, the tail is unaffected if grabbed. The tail is very prehensile, and can be used to grasp things, much like certain primates do, or to fly as Goku demonstrated in the World Martial Arts Tournament. The tail also serves to help young Saiyans with balance, as when Goku and Gohan's tails were first removed, they had trouble standing, let alone walking or running, at first. When Vegeta's tail was cut off, his balance was unaffected.

The tail also provides a unique gift in that it allows a Saiyan to transform into a Great Ape or the golden variant if exposed to the Blutz Waves of a full moon or another source of Blutz waves (for example, blutz wave machine, Earth, moon ball). If the tail is removed, this power is lost. All Saiyans have the ability for their tail to grow back when they are young unless it is permanently removed. Goku once stated that he feels stronger than before when his tail grows back. Gohan's tail grows back during the fight with Vegeta, notably when the artificial moon was present. According to the Daizenshuu (the 7-part Dragon Ball encyclopedia), the tail will often suddenly grow back if the Saiyan is in danger. Tails also provide a boost in Super Saiyan transformations, as during the time when Goku was shrunk into a child in Dragon Ball GT, he had trouble maintaining his transformations until his tail reformed, to the point where he was able to activate Super Saiyan 3 for a decent amount of time (along with his tail glowing gold). Despite its appearance, the tails of Saiyans are just as strong as their limbs, giving them in a sense an extra hand to fight with.

Gohan is the only half-breed Saiyan seen with a tail in the series. Other half-breeds like Trunks, Goten, and Bulla are not seen with tails. The reason behind this is never explained in the series, but it is possible they were simply removed at birth in such a way that is rendered permanent.

Great ApeEdit

The Great Ape form can only be obtained by Saiyans that still possess their tail. The Saiyan grows incredibly in size and tenfold in strength while drastically changing in appearance. In this state, some Saiyans have limited control, but their aggressiveness is at its peak and they often become mindless animals fueled by destructive rage.

Golden Great ApeEdit

The newer form of Great Ape that appears in Dragon Ball GT, Golden Great Ape, is the far stronger transformation of the Great Ape. Their offensive capacities have become much greater, and their rage is even more intense than the Great Ape's. While in the Golden Great Ape state, the power and strength of a Saiyan increase extraordinarily.

False Super SaiyanEdit

Untitled (66)
False Super Saiyan is a pseudo-Super Saiyan form resembling a glorified version of the Kaio-ken form, with a orange-yellowish surge of aura. It is also achieved the same way as super saiyan but with less anger. The users eyes lose the pupils and irises and the skin appears to have a yellow hue. The hair also stands up like a super saiyan but is orange red. It only appears in the movie Lord Slug and Goku is the only known saiyan who has achieved this form.

Super SaiyanEdit

This is the standard Super Saiyan transformation. It is achieved when a Saiyan experiences great loss and rage, as shown by Goku when Frieza killed Krillin and Vegeta when Goku surpassed his abilities. The eyes turn green-blue and the hair turns gold. Broly's Super Saiyan has blue and/or purple hair due to the use of a Mind Control Device; his hair has the regular Super Saiyan hair color without it. There are three variants of this form.
  • Ascended Super Saiyan: An advancement in the power of the original Super Saiyan state.
  • Ultra Super Saiyan: an even stronger advancement in the power of the original Super Saiyan state, however lacks speed as increased muscle size restricts movement.
  • Full-Power Super Saiyan: the state of mental and physical perfection of the Super Saiyan transformation itself, rather than an advanced stage. In this stage it is even possible to sleep as a super saiyan.

Legendary Super Saiyan

Legendary Super Saiyan is a unique and very rare Super Saiyan transformation rather than just a title. The result is a Super Saiyan with a seemingly endless supply of energy. It looks similar to the regular super saiyan transformation except the hairgains a greenish tint to the gold and muscle mass is greatly increased without hindrance to speed. The only known user of this form is Broly, as seen during the movie Dragon Ball Z: Broly - The Legendary Super Saiyan. It is said that only one is born every 10,000 years.

Super Saiyan 2Edit

Super Saiyan 2 is the direct successor to the first Super Saiyan transformation. It is very similar to the original form in appearance and attainment; however, the power output is far greater, as speed, strength, and energy output all drastically increase and the aura sparks electricity. The hair also sticks up more.

Super Saiyan 3Edit

Super Saiyan 3 is one of the strongest Super Saiyan forms. It is the third form of Super Saiyan, the successor to the first and second transformations and is achieved through energy concentration. The hair grows drastically longer and the eyebrows disappear. However, there is a time limit on how long one can remain a super saiyan three.

Super Saiyan GodEdit

This is a Saiyan form that grants the user enough power to fight on par with a god, but only for a limited time (however, Goku's body remembered the feel of the transformation and was able to fight ith its strength after losing the transformation and later automatically transformed back into a super saiyan god). The user's hair sticks up very slightly and turns red along with the eyes and aura. It occurs when six pure-hearted Saiyans hold hands and transfer energy to the one of them. Its only known users are the original super saiyan god and Goku, who used it in his fight against the God of Destruction, Bills in the movie Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods (though Akira Toriyama claims that in the next movie Vegeta, too, will become a super saiyan god).

Super Saiyan 4Edit

Super Saiyan 4 is a Saiyan transformation present in the anime-only sequel Dragon Ball GT. The user loses their shirt and the hair grows longer( in Goku's case it remained black but Vegeta's hair turned brown and Gogeta's hair turned reddish). Red or occasionally brown fur grows all over the body except for the pectoral and abdominal muscles and face. The eyes also change color and if the saiyan does not have a tail, it grows back. It can only be attained if the Saiyan can already turn Super Saiyan, transforms into a Golden Great Ape, and then regains conscious control over the form. After this form is attained once, it can be accessed at any point.
