"Infected" is a term used to describe a relatively new variant of zombie that has become quite common in horror cinema since the turn of the century. What sets Infected apart from regular zombies is that they are not necessarily undead, nor are they only motivated by hunger. Infected are people who are afflicted with some manner of virus that turns them into rabid animals driven by basic instincts such as hunger or simply rage. Infected humans lose all powers of reason and become focused solely on attacking and killing any living thing in their sights. Unlike traditional zombies, Infected can run at an athletic pace and seem to be capable of running for long periods without getting tired. They also have a tendency to ignore injuries and lack any sense of self-preservation, charging and clambering over obstacles and shrugging off gunfire as they close the gap between them and their prey.
