Gyarados

Gyarados is a vicious ocean-dwelling Pokémon. This mighty sea serpent is a Water/Flying-type Pokémon and is prized among many Pokémon Trainers for its raw power in battle. It is said that training a Gyarados takes a great deal of skill and patience, but once trained, is one of the most dependable Pokémon in any Trainer's team. Gyarados evolves from the humble Magikarp which, in stark contrast, is the weakest of all Pokémon.

Pokédex Data[]

Gyarados is a serpentine Pokémon with a long body - over 21 feet in length - covered in slightly overlapping scales. It is mostly blue with a yellow underbelly, and it has a row of yellow spots down each side. Its mouth is very large and gaping, bearing four pointed teeth and yellow lips. It has one barbel and a small white fin on each side of its face. The barbels are white on a female and blue on a male. It has small, red eyes, a three-pointed, dark blue crest on its head, and four white, spiky dorsal fins. Gyarados's tail fin is similar in structure to the crest on its head, except with a thin, white fin spread between the points.

Classed as the Atrocious Pokémon, Gyarados is extremely violent. Its aggressive tendencies are said to be the result of an alteration in its brain chemistry during the evolutionary process. Its scales are as hard as steel and its jaws and fangs are strong enough to crunch through solid rock. Although classed as a Flying-type, Gyarados does not actually fly, though it can leap tremendous distances in a single bound, either from water or from the ground.

In ancient times, Gyarados was feared as a "god of destruction" by humans. Its appearance was regarded as an omen of doom and ancient tales tell of Gyarados flying into such a terrible rage that it would destroy entire cities. Its rampages are said to last weeks at a time and it does not rest until it has destroyed everything in sight.

Abilities[]

  • Crunch - A ferocious biting attack of such pressure that Gyarados can crush stone with its jaws.
  • Twister - Gyarados conjures a tornado as a form of attack, repeatedly buffeting all nearby opponents with strong winds.
  • Whirlpool - In the ocean, Gyarados conjures a vortex to suck in opponents.
  • Ice Fang - Gyarados' breath casts a chilling effect as it bites its opponent and can potentially freeze an enemy solid.
  • Brine - Gyarados blasts an opponent with seawater. This attack is more effective against opponents that have already been wounded.
  • Rain Dance - Gyarados conjures up a storm and the rain increases the effectiveness of its Water-type moves.
  • Thrash - Gyarados flails about in a rage, causing heavy damage to any opponent that gets in its way.
  • Hydro Pump - Gyarados fires a blast of water at extremely high pressure for maximum damage.
  • Dragon Dance - A mystical dance that increases Gyarados' speed and attack power.
  • Hyper Beam - Gyarados fires a destructive beam of energy from its mouth that obliterates anything in its path.

Mega Evolution[]

Gyarados-Mega

Gyarados can be transformed into Mega Gyarados using the Mega Stone Gyaradosite. In its Mega form, its body grows even longer and bulkier. The fins on its cheeks become longer and gain a yellow tint. Its crest is larger and black, and its barbels also gain considerable length. A large spike extends downward underneath its chin, and it now has a black underside with a red stripe around the edges. The yellow spots along its body are replaced by raised red scales, which propel Mega Gyarados through the water. Two large yellow fins with blue spines appear on its back. Most of the other fins along its back disappear, replaced by two rows of blue spikes. There are now four yellowish, spiky fins near its tail: two on its back and two on its underside.

The Mega Evolution is temporary and only occurs during battle if the Trainer is carrying a Mega Ring and the Pinsir holds the corresponding Mega Stone. In its Mega Form, Gyarados is even more ferocious than before, but can still be commanded by a Trainer that it truly trusts. If its Trainer cannot calm it, however, Mega Gyarados will become fixated on destroying everything in its path.
