Representation of Sabbat gatherings from the chronicles of Johann Jakob Wick.

The Black Sabbath - also known as the Witches' Sabbath or Black Mass - is an event when witches would gather and commune with demons and unholy spirits. These events were supposedly quite commonplace during the 17th century and elements of the Sabbath would include wantonly defiling the holy cross, praying to Satan, indulging in cannibalism and uninhibited sexual activity.

During these rituals, it was believed that Satan and other demons would appear and possess those who participated.
